How does the roughness profiler measure the surface quality of the workpiece?

The roughness profile meter is a high-precision measuring instrument specially used to measure the surface roughness and contour shape of workpieces. In precision manufacturing, surface quality directly affects the wear resistance, sealing, fitting accuracy and service life of the workpiece, so accurate measurement of surface roughness is crucial.

Working principle

The roughness profiler uses a contact measurement method. A high-precision diamond stylus slides along the workpiece surface at a constant speed. The stylus moves vertically with the microscopic undulations of the surface. The displacement sensor converts the vertical displacement of the stylus into an electrical signal. After amplification and digital processing, the software calculates various roughness parameters and profile parameters.

Commonly used evaluation parameters

  1. Ra (arithmetic mean roughness): The most commonly used surface roughness parameter, representing the arithmetic mean deviation of the profile.
  2. Rz (ten-point height of microscopic unevenness): The sum of the average values of the five maximum peak heights and the five maximum valley depths.
  3. Rmax (maximum height): The vertical distance between the highest peak and lowest valley of the contour.
  4. Contour parameters: Including straightness, angle, convexity, logarithmic curve, etc., used to evaluate the contour shape of the workpiece.
